Songwriting feels like…

Songwriting feels like a cozy couch with nowhere else to be. You are here and nothing else matters. Stories live forever and dreams do come true.

Often times I find myself jotting down notes when an idea strikes. Yet ideas don’t always strike first. To start off I like to go by feeling and touch alone…

I’ll grab a guitar and start strumming and humming. I let my senses guide me toward the discovery of something that sounds good.

Songwriting feels like the first bite of an excellent meal. Tasty, and there’s more to come! Where shall we go from here?

Having grown up in the bar business, Riley operates Shannon’s bars, restaurant and entertainment venue with his family.

Over the past few years as the Shannon’s businesses have grown, Riley has endeavored to focus more on creating and playing music. His latest project is Life on Mars. Check out new music single releases every month!

Life on Mars is an Americana Music Album with eclectic elements that was inspired by a journey through Iceland in 2016. The song Live One writes about this experience, asking, “What’s it like to be a stone shot into magma bursting out?” From there the album took shape as a metaphor for life on Earth, what we’ve done here, how we’ve grown, our follies… and if we went to Mars, what would we want to bring and do differently?

Maybelline is about strength, diversity, equality and empathy for others.

News out of #Alabama is troubling… my new song “Maybelline” was written with #WomensRights in mind… the idea was inspired when my mom, sister and others attended the march in Washington 2 years ago! 💪 In the opening lyric I sing, “She wanted to go real far, like Alabama won’t you take me home to Mars…” 🎶 I did not expect the example would be so poignant and coincidental during the week of this song release… Fuk those idiots who try to regulate bodies other than their own! Choose #LoveoverFear ✌️☘️

“She wanted to go real far, like Alabama won’t you take me home to Mars where I can sleep among the stars at night? She never cared for darkness. If we come apart at the seams, will we still share these old jeans? If we can’t stop fueling the fight, will we walk together tomorrow, or will we wash away? Will we wash away? Maybelline, Maybelline… maybe, maybe… never thought I’d fly without ya… Walkin’ alone again I’ve seen your face before and look at your eyes so blue, dressed to chill another Friday night. Why can’t it be just like this?” © 2019 Riley Hodges

Staring at Kirkjufell

Staring off into the sea I see a silky wide abyss. My mouth was watering for I had nothing else but myself I thought to give. Was it me that felt I couldn’t see another gazing soul? I had thought I’d be far off before I’d grow too old. Where hath been whence I sure came for longing forever more? I stopped to think a mountain here was lonely in the cold…

Interesting or nah? I conjured a space inside my mind somehow tonight. As I was laying in bed the above image was literally mirrored in shape and color from my actual mirror and soft orange-pinkish light. Actually, I’ve been thinking about this image for quite some time. This trip to Iceland has showed me a path that I’m continually discovering with more purpose.

Kirkjufell (Icelandic: Church Mountain – kirk-you-fet-l) is a 463 m high mountain on the north coast of Iceland’s Snæfellsnes peninsula, near the town of Grundarfjörður. It is claimed to be the most photographed mountain in the country. WikipediaElevation: 1,519′ Did you know: Scenes from Game of Thrones Season 6 and 7 were filmed near Kirkjufell, featuring as the “arrowhead mountain” that the Hound and the company north of the Wall see when capturing a wight. mountainjourney.com

When we first traveled to this site to camp we drove past this location (to the left) toward the coast. As we reached a fork in the road, we saw that we could either go left to continue on this narrowing road, or go right and enter an otherwise normal looking area adjacent to this volcano and out toward the Arctic sea. Upon further review, the road was blocked by a small, unassuming gate with a compact red sign that said, “Prison.”

@ Tractor lyfe

So we went left, but not for long as a tractor started quickly approaching. Alrighty then… we backed up a few hundred feet to reach a small pasture with enough space to park just before the fork.

@rriless

After we got situated, and took “our vitamins” so to speak, Patrick warmed up some hot dogs… and then… the horses started to arrive…

Our Story: Chapter One

I took this photo during a thrilling trek through the eastern region of Iceland. We had bounced and slid all morning while navigating the island’s rocky terrain toward the coast. The night before we had seen the aurorae among an otherwise pitch-black starry sky. As we emerged from the experience we were focused, and we felt good. This is our story.

Courage: let me know your thoughts on courage . . . your stories, experiences, feelings, miscellaneous ideas, beliefs . . .

Format: send me topics, character ideas, storylines, or anything you think might help format these posts into a cohesive narrative.

“As more distant stars are revealed in this animation depicting an infinite, homogeneous and static universe, they fill the gaps between closer stars. Olbers’s paradox argues that as the night sky is dark, at least one of these three assumptions about the nature of the universe must be false.”

“Street Walker” New_Music_Release

T-minus 7 days . . . New Single: Street Walker . . . Friday, 4.12.19

I am thinking of a color across the spectrum and through the eyes of a child’s inflection of viewpoint of innocence for minds shut off to the world with happiness and lollipops for all the boys and girls because our streets are paved of gold for bigger interests than the walkers who labor and beg for some business but health in consequence limits their potential whereas our assistance can make or break their survival.

The new single, Street Walker, is from my upcoming album, Life On Mars. I wrote this song after an experience I saw on the streets of Long Beach. A guy walks by and grabs a drink from a bar table that we put in place for guests, not the dirty street-walkers. But this guy grabbed and sipped a Vodka Soda and set off a chain reaction. I intervened to tone down the ensuing battle and a regular named Wild Bill was there just in time to hand the streetwalker a cigarette to keep his moving and grooving on down the line.

I’m listening to the song now with earbuds at home. I just walked over to pet my black cat, Jeep, and as the song was playing I thought it would be cool to shoot a video that has a kind of first person POV of me getting up in the morning, petting Jeep, do a little this and a little that and I’m out the door off to the streets. I guess I’d have to hit the bar for this one.

Will explore further. Until then, I’ll quote the first verse:

Coming up like a shadow in the night. Gotta get high before the dawn. The morning sun don’t care about me. Where’s my next opportunity?

The album conjures a utopian dream where virtues like Empathy and Courage are held in high regard. The songs chat an earthly tone with the opening track, Street Walker, reciting the exclaims of pedestrian life through bouncy beats, clean guitar riffs and a padded saxophone, while Maybelline, a dreamer for equal rights wanting to sleep among the stars, follows a laid-back funk-rhythm that is supported by uplifting vocals and a Hammond B3.

September 2016 photo by RH – “As you drive along Víðidalur, you will come to Kolugil Farm which stands beside the Víðidalsá river. Just below the farm, the waters flow peacefully downwards to plunge into the deep, rugged gorge called Kolugljúfur. Their journey then sends them cascading over many waterfalls which bear the name Kolufossar Falls in honour of the giantess, Kola. It is a breathtaking sight to drive across the bridge and watch the calm waters of the river suddenly leap and tumble onwards over so many impressive falls – a sight which will leave no one unmoved.” – northiceland.is

C’est La Vie reminds us that such is life while drawing the listener into a world of psychedelic and bouncy rhythms whereas Coming Home brings us back to solid ground by expressing the simplicities of passionate love with a pedal-steel, rocking solos and female backing vocals to support words like, “That old house feels just like a smile sittin’ on a summer night, and maybe we’ll smile while we’re rockin’ on a ‘lil baby porch swing.”

September 2016 photo by RH – “Iceland is a country in the North Atlantic Ocean that is aptly known as the “Land of Fire and Ice”. It is an island born out of volcanic eruptions over millions of years. Up until 8000 years ago, the entire island was buried under ice.” – youngzine.org

Next up, Live One takes aim at the god within us all, rooted in the evolving chaos of actual rocks and forms of matter underlying the processes behind life on earth: “If One is a gift to the many, God is manifest in contemplating. Between this and that are those that seek nought in the shackles breaking. Stillness in your mind, it feels just like a loving kiss. I wonder if it’s known that we can be the nothingness…” Expect 2 minutes of soaking and frantic saxophone to convey the messages further sonically as the song finales.

If the first half of the album is dreamlike, the second half shows that reality has finally set in. Let It Go stories the simple wisdoms of attachment as jangly strings quickly turn to screaming guitars, wet vocals and apoplectic lyrics, and Long Couple of Days follows a more balanced path using folk elements and a classic line, “Shoo fly outta my way.”

September 2016 photo by RH – “ancestors of the Icelandic horse were probably taken to Iceland by Viking Age Scandinavians between 860 and 935 AD. The Norse settlers were followed by immigrants from Norse colonies in Ireland, the Isle of Man and the Western Isles of Scotland.” – wiki.org

Finally, High Low culminates in energetic fashion with heavy drums and heavy distortion to make a statement anthemically that given a choice of high or low, “we can go high” and “when you’re ready to come we can light sparks.”

September 2016 photo by RH: SVÖRTULOFT AT SNÆFELLSNES PENINSULA – “Sailing in the Faxaflói bay and the Breiðafjörður bay in the western part of Iceland might be secure and calm, but traveling from one to the other can be quite tricky. The sailing by the tip of Snæfellsnes peninsula, past Svörtuloft is still a serious business. Throughout the centuries there have been drastic incidents and casualties. Ships have stranded, and as anyone can imagine looking at the sharp and black lava cliffs, this is not a good place to strand a ship. Most of them are quickly blown to pieces by the shore. The formation of the cliff is quite spectacular as they are dark and black lava cliffs.” – hiticeland.com

Build, build, build…

But why? Why do we build? We create things for a purpose to get us along in life. Some things are easy and other things cause you strife. When you have a little playbook to guide you around, your friendship is in labor for those who call you clown. But when you have a flavor to offer those who pay. You may have a true labor you build from day-to-day.

What the hell am I talking about? Work, blah, eat, blah, survival, bro. Do you even survive, bro? I am thinking of a number between 1 and survival. No one cares if you guess the number. Just fucking survive.

Is that not the fundamental basis for human life… survive, survive, survive. Build, build, build. Is this the way of the Universe as defined by entropy? Things emanate? Not quite. We engineer. One word: Lemmings.

Speaking of engineering, the last 2 months have taken me to the moon and back. I’ve seen that dusty shell with a rocky somewhat molten core. It does not complete me. Next stop, Mars.

My upcoming album, Life On Mars, is a metaphor for this journey we experience every day. What will we bring with us?

Although we experience life differently, we are the same. Build, build, build. Survive, survive, survive. And something that unites us universally, cosmically, theoretically with strings: sound and song and musical dances along the plains and across the axis through the years of light traveling past us at speeds so fast melting minds like molasses and with limited views at smaller levels where things get weirder and weirder. Bring your glasses.

So this post is about everything and nothing in a way. I want to jot down more experiences and stories to tell. I want to share funny viewpoints and make fun of stupid people. But not today. Today is simply to celebrate greatness in all forms. I shall quote myself, “To lead in life is crucial, but aspirations for greatness are essential.”

I also want to share lessons learned, perhaps a song-by-song favor profile kinda thing and next goals for music release. Hmm. Building…

A lotta lotta

A whole lotta lotta has happened lately that all my happenings are filled to the brim of a cup with luck and whiskey to share. I’m not sure where to start… probably where I’m least likely to care… like, for instance, people are stupid. What is happening currently with that I’m sure you can easily find out. Look around! I also happen to have news to share. Feel me out.

I’m recording 6 additional songs! And I think they’re coming out better than the first bunch of songs from October and November. Maybe? Truly.

FU 2017, hello 2018

Blame it all on my roots. I showed up in boots. Hands touching hands. Reaching out. I’ve got news for you. You’re the best man and I’d withstand a boulder for you. Maybe not. Cuz that’s a lot. But Your Song is what I’d like you to share. I’m off to San Francisco for a charity event. I wonder if I’ll find a woman again. But of course, I know there’s an awful lot out there. That’s awful like a waffle with your choice of toppings. I hope the fruit and syrup is popping. Everyone’s drunk, and may your holiday stay crunk. I just hope you can keep me alive. To sum it up, I’ve got music in my cup and my horizon is filled with blue sky.

If it sounds like I’m super confused, that’s because I am. Well, I actually don’t know. I might be. The thing is I have a lot going on. So that makes sense. What else makes sense? Hmm. Music.

What is written at the introduction to this entry is the jumbled summation of my month of December up until the week before Christmas. I was so fucking tired and hungover from several events that I couldn’t finish this entry. Then I got sick, which was exacerbated by the fact that I was beaten down like a dog in heat. I’m not sure I know what that expression means other than referring to canine birthing. See why I’m confused?

We had our company holiday party at our venue, At The Top on Monday, December 18th. Hence, the opening lines of lyrics for 2 of the many songs I sang that night. Yes, we had karaoke. Yes, we had a tattoo artist. Yes, I got a tattoo. Yes, we had tarot, vintage video games, beer pong, etc. Yes, it was fun!

I have not been posting regularly on this blog. In my last post I talked about plans I had for meeting with my cousin. We have not met yet. FUCK. But I have been working on vocals for Coming Home and Maybelline. I have worked out the former, whereas the latter tune I need to revisit. What’s left to consider is a duet with a female vocalist.

The reference to Your Song and Best Man in the introduction is because I have been asked to be the Best Man and sing Your Song at my best friend’s wedding. I have spent a lot of time and basically have the song figured out on guitar and piano. My approach was to research tabs, which none of them are really that accurate. So then I started playing the song on piano because, well, it’s Elton John. I found a lot of great YouTube videos and lessons that gave me the essentials along with varying options for how I can play this song. After a few days, and as I’ve been reorganizing my house with new furniture, I cleaned my piano and then remembered I had songbooks in my piano bench. Sure enough I have a book of sheet music for Elton John. Your Song is last, and it includes guitar chords. It’s been really fun to learn this song!

I have also spent time learning some Jazz essentials, like classical chord triplets versus the concept of Jazz 7, 9, 11, and 13 chords, which basically means if you’re looking at white keys starting with C being, you will skip a white key then arrive at E being the 3rd, then skip to G the 5th, which player together is your standard C chord. For 7, 9, 11, 13, you would continue by skipping a white key to arrive at B, D, F, A. This is as far as you can take it with stacking a chord since a 15 would bring you back to the root of C. Also, another useful lesson is that common Jazz progressions are played as 2-5-1. So for the key of C, talking about chords, the Root 1 is C major, the 2 is D minor, and the 5 is G major. I also spent time going through different rhythms and scales with common ways to solo using your right hand.

My goal this week is to spend time developing a plan for releasing my new music. That includes a release date, associated media content and marketing, short term goals and strategies. I think this, maybe oddly, will help me determine what I’m going to do to wrap up recording! I want to be done with this project so I can get it out into the world.

More on all this later… If you’ve read this far, thank you. I hope I did not waste your time.
